What Chlorine Really Does to Your Swimsuit

Chlorine does not wear a swimsuit out so much as switch it off. What pool water does to elastane and dye, and the habits that slow the damage.

Ask anyone who swims lengths three times a week and you will hear the same story. The colour turns chalky. The seat begins to bag ten minutes into a session. The leg line stops gripping and the straps need shortening again. Somewhere around month eight, a suit that felt superb in January is quietly retired — while the one worn twice on a beach holiday still looks new after three summers.

That is not bad luck, and it is usually not a manufacturing fault. It is chlorine, doing precisely what it was put in the water to do. The useful part is that the process is well understood, and most of it can be slowed down considerably by a swimmer who knows what is happening.

What chlorine is actually doing in the water

Pool chlorine works by oxidation. Added to water, it forms hypochlorous acid, an aggressive oxidising agent that breaks apart the chemical bonds holding organic molecules together. That is how it sterilises a pool full of strangers: it takes bacteria apart at the molecular level. It has no mechanism for distinguishing bacteria from the polymer chains in your swimsuit, which are also long organic molecules held together by bonds it can break. Nothing dissolves and nothing visibly corrodes. The chains simply get snipped into shorter ones, a few at a time, every hour the fabric spends in the water — and, importantly, every hour afterwards while the suit sits damp with pool water still in it.

Elastane fails first, and it fails quietly

A swim knit is mostly nylon, which is comparatively robust, plus a smaller proportion of elastane, which is not. Elastane is a segmented polymer: rigid blocks joined by soft, flexible ones. The soft segments are the springs — they are what lets the fibre stretch to several times its length and pull back again. They are also exactly what oxidation attacks. When enough of them are severed, the fibre does not snap or tear. It simply stops coming back. This is why chlorine damage almost never looks like damage: there is no hole, no thin patch, nothing to point at. There is only a suit that has lost its recovery, and no wash or careful drying brings that back.

Colour goes the same way, for the same reason. A dye holds its shade because of a particular arrangement of bonds that absorbs some wavelengths of light and reflects the rest. Oxidation rearranges those bonds, which is the entire principle behind household bleach — pool chlorine is simply a slower, more dilute version of the same chemistry. Navy drifts toward grey, black takes on a rusty cast, brights go dusty. Fading is worth treating as a signal rather than a cosmetic annoyance: the elastane in the same fabric is usually some way down the same road. Overhead sun accelerates both, which is why an outdoor pool asks more of a suit than an indoor one.

Chlorine damage rarely looks like damage. It looks like a suit that simply stopped fitting.

What chlorine-resistant fibre changes

Chlorine-resistant swim fabrics are built to give oxidation less to work with — fibres whose chemistry is inherently less vulnerable, and denser knits that keep the bulk of the yarn out of direct contact with the water. The honest framing is slower, not immune. No swimsuit survives a chlorinated pool indefinitely, and a brand claiming otherwise is overselling. What resistant fibre buys is time, and a great deal of it: seasons rather than months before recovery begins to fade. It is the single largest factor in how long a pool suit lasts, and it is decided at the mill. It also matters most to the people in the water most often, because concentration and heat both speed the reaction up — a busy indoor pool or a hot tub is harder on a suit than open, cooler water.

The habits that buy you seasons

  • 01Soak the suit in the shower before you get in — fabric already holding clean water takes up less pool water.
  • 02Rinse in cool water the moment you are out. Two minutes removes most of the chlorine before it can do its slow work.
  • 03Never leave a wet suit rolled in a bag. The water evaporates on the way home; the chlorine stays behind and concentrates.
  • 04Hand-wash gently in cool water and never wring. Twisting tears the elastane you are trying to protect.
  • 05Dry flat in the shade. Radiators, tumble dryers and hot windowsills finish what the pool started.
  • 06If you swim often, rotate two suits so each gets a full day to dry and recover between sessions.
